African Quartz Mining

African Quartz Mining intends to mine the pegmatites in bulk through roll over (concurrent rehabilitation) opencast mining method employing drilling, blasting, loading and hauling to a mobile crusher facility for the correct sizing of the feed material before milling. Optimised process flowsheet development through enhanced metallurgical test-work will be employed for the design and costing of separating the pegmatite contained minerals from the quartz

African Quartz Silicon

African Quartz Silicon intends to establish a Submerged ARC Furnace Plant in the Upington Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the Silicon Corridor in the Northern Cape of South Africa. This Greenfields project will be linked to the Riemvasmaak Quartz Mine, Silicon Crystal-Growing Production Factory and the Silicon Photovoltaic Module Manufacturing Factory where the (Quartz) SiO2 is beneficiated to silicon.

African Quartz Crystal Growth

African Quartz Growth will acquire the Czochralski crystal-growing system EKZ 3500 has been specially designed for industrial production of monocrystalline Silicon crystals. The Czochralski process is also known as “crystal pulling” or “pulling from the melt”. In this process, Silicon (Si) is first melted and then allowed to freeze into a crystalline state in a controlled manner. The advantage of this method is that it is fast and highly controllable.

African Quartz Photovoltaic

African Quartz Photovoltaic intends to establish a Photovoltaic Module Manufacturing Plant, which consist of various stations including the raw material preparation, string & layup, interconnection & monitoring, lamination, framing and testing. This Greenfields project will be linked to the Riemvasmaak Quartz Mine and the Submerged ARC Furnace where the SiO2 is beneficiated to silicon. Silicon is used to manufacture Thin film, Mono-crystalline silicon and Multi-crystalline panels.

African Quartz Semiconductors

African Quartz Semiconductor intends to establish a semiconductor wafer manufacturing plant to produce and growing semiconductor ingots to be transformed in semiconductor wafers. To grow an ingot, the first step is to heat the silicon to 1420°C, above the melting point of silicon. As the seed is slowly lifts above the melt, the surface tension between the seed and the melt causes a thin film of the silicon to adhere to the seed and then to cool.

African Quartz Marketing

Photovoltaic can produce electricity at a cheaper price than other sources of electricity that could have delivered electricity at the same time if it is mine, process and beneficiated on the Silicon Corridor in South Africa. In order to compete in the electricity sector, PV technologies need to provide electricity at a cost equal to or below the cost of other technologies. Obviously, power generation technologies are providing electricity at different costs, depending on their nature, the cost of fuel, the cost of maintenance and the number of operating hours during which they are delivering electricity.


African Quartz is a vertically integrated world-class company that will mine and process Quartz (Si02) into High Purity Quartz (HPQ) and produce Silicon that is used to manufacture semiconductor wafers and Photovoltaic cells and modules. African Quartz will then further beneficiate Silicon to manufacture high quality products such as semiconductor wafers and photovoltaic cells and modules which are used to generate electricity for end-user customers such as Eskom, residential homes and commercial businesses to reduce costs for them. Semiconductor wafers are a thin slice of semiconductor substance, like crystalline silicon, used in electronics for the manufacturing of integrated circuits which is used in the manufacturing of smart cell phone, televisions. computers, calculators and almost any electronic component.

Verical Integration Strategy

Vertical integration is a strategy of African Quartz to own and control its raw material (Processing, Mining and Exploration of Pegmatites for Quartz (SiO2), mineral beneficiation plants (Submerged ARC Furnace Plant), and manufacturing (Silicon Crystal-Growing Production Plant), (Photovoltaic Module Manufacturing Plant) and (Semiconductor Wafer Manufacturing Plant) as well as it retail and marketing division as subsidiaries of the company to control its value and supply chain.

A few words about us

African Quartz was established by Ho Oa Tago Primary Mining Co-operative  after the quality of the Quartz was confirmed by Mintek an ISO accredited laboratory who conducted all the analytical tests. Earthlab conducted density studies on all the different lithologies using the Archimedes method. Density data was validated and verified with no outliers. Earthlab logged all the diamond drilled core and created the sample consignment. Samples were split in half by Earthlab and then transported to Mintek. Mintek uses the XRF to analyse the silica content and ICP-OES conducted for trace elements. Furthermore, Mintek also performed internal assay QAQC through various steps and processes.

The quality Quartz unit was modelled as a hunch structure that follows the surface topography. Volume of the quality Quartz unit was estimated as 8.813 cubic meters with a tonnage of 24, 253. The Main Pegmatite unit has a volume of 447,786 cubic and a tonnage of 1.180.811. The vein network has a volume of 966,498 cubic meters with a tonnage of 2.645.305. The portion of the vein network comprising of potential economic interest has a volume of 570.233 cubic meters and tonnage of 1.560.727. The Quartz found has economic potential for mining.

Doggart (2019) confirmed the abundant pegmatite occurrences of the Orange River Pegmatite Belt (ORPB) for their Quartz (SiO2) component. The ORPB is a ~450 km long, ~40-80 km wide belt containing over 45,000 individual pegmatites that were emplaced in the Namaqua Sector of the Namaqua-Natal Metamorphic Complex.
